As a university-trained graphic designer and design teacher, I worked for years in the industry before returning to my first love: sketching and painting in watercolour. That’s why I’m thrilled to be launching “Design Ideas for Your Sketchbook.” Because it combines my two great passions — graphic design and watercolour sketching.
During my formative years, I was lucky to attend workshops in Maine with the great Edgar A. Whitney. In my estimation, he remains one of the great watercolour masters. Why? Because his fundamental approach was design. Understanding and applying the Principles and Elements of Design every time you pick up a pencil, pen or brush — every time you open a sketchbook!
In this course, I’ll share my own design-based experience and techniques with you. You’ll learn how to design every sketchbook page, so it’s a unified narrative of what you see and experience. How to use white space, dominant shapes, shadows and lettering to make your pages pop!
Design Ideas for Your Sketchbook is different from my other courses
It’s an extended course, nearly 4 hours in length, that includes a bonus PDF, SHARI'S 25 SKETCHBOOK PAGES, culled from my personal sketchbooks. These 25 examples, together with what you learn in this course, will inspire you to design your own eye-popping sketchbook pages.
In Design Ideas for Your Sketchbook, you'll learn
Design Theory
We’ll identify the 7 Elements and 9 Principles of Design. I’ll show you the publication grid I used on the job for years, and that I continue to apply in my sketchbooks.
Design Practice
Then we’ll put theory into practice. You'll watch me use the Elements and Principles of Design in two demos, and learn how to give your sketchbook pages a lively, unified three-dimensionality.
Sketching Practice
Along the way, I’ll share my techniques for sketching trees, architectural structures and reflections on water. In addition, you’ll get to practice sketching from life, as we capture a tabletop of colourful garden vegetables, or other favourite objects, in our sketchbooks.
Lettering
We’ll practice letter forms and fonts. I’ll show you how to place words on a page to create an added layer of pictorial interest and information.
